What's New - October 2002
If you're interested in GIS and ways to map your data, you'll
definitely want to check out October's Site of the Month:
GeoCommunity. Proclaiming itself to be the "premier
resource for GIS and geospatial data", GeoCommunity's GIS data
depot offers a comprehensive, easy to use catalog for finding a wide
range of GIS data, down to the county and block group levels.
While many datasets are available only for sale, this advertising-supported site
offers free access to many files. The site is
especially useful because it assembles files from a variety of public
and private sources in its listings. And if you have a budget
for GIS data, you'll find GeoCommunity to be a fantastic data shopping
mall, with a cornucopia of geophysical and socioeconomic data and
files, satellite photographs and other geographic resources. Pay

Research and development
activity has long been recognized as an important source of
national economic growth, but in recent years a number of economic
researchers have called attention to the role of R&D in stimulating local and regional economies. A
wealth of data collected by a number of agencies provide analysts
with material for assessing local R&D proficiency and
investment trends. You'll find interesting collections from the
American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National
Science Foundation, and National Institutes of Health, and a series of
useful compilations generated by our prolific friends at the State
Science and Technology Institute. Take a look at these sites.

It's been a brutal fire season in the
West this year, with especially serious fires in Colorado and
Oregon. As with other issues, we at EconData.Net always like to
try to quantify these events, and sure enough, we found that the hardworking folks
at the National Interagency Fire Center track state-by-state the number and extent of
wildland fires and associated injuries and
fatalities for the U.S. You'll also find good maps of fire-damaged areas. Our quick guide to their resources
highlights the following:

As you've no doubt noticed,
EconData.Net is 100 percent free of annoying banner ads, pop-ups and
other forms of crass commercialization that slow down your surfing and
get in the way of your work. We like it that way too, and
continue to be able to offer you this service free, and without such
interruptions, thanks to our generous sponsors. Sponsors want to
know that our site is being used, and our surveys show that most
people learn about us from word-of-mouth from you, our registered
users. So if you like the service, and find it useful, let your
friends know--you'll be helping us continue and improve EconData.Net
(and keep it safe from pesky ads).
