County Business Patterns, Bureau of the Census

Available on-line in three formats. Industries covered do not include agriculture, railroad transportation, and government. 

Economic Census Geographic Area Series, Bureau of the Census
Data on number of establishments, by employment size, by NAICS code (up to six digits), 2002. Data available by states and metro areas.

1992 Enterprise Statistics, Bureau of the Census Limited Free Data
Data for companies and for auxiliary establishments of companies (e.g., headquarters offices, research and development facilities, and data processing centers), by industry, for states. Consolidated company data include sales, employment, payroll, form of organization and enterprise industry classification. Supplementary data for large companies include inventories, assets, fringe benefits, capital and research and development (R&D) expenditures, and depreciation. Data for auxiliaries include sales, employment and payroll, billings, inventories, capital and R&D expenditures, and selected purchased services. Auxiliary establishment data available only on CD-ROM.

Survey of Business Owners, Bureau of the Census 
The Survey of Business Owners is a consolidation of the earlier Surveys of Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises. Number of firms, gross receipts, number of paid employees, and annual payroll, by gender and race of owner, by industry, for states, metro areas, counties, and cities. Covers individual proprietorships, partnerships, and subchapter S corporations. Data for women-owned "C" corporations provided as well. Minorities covered include black, Hispanic, Asian and Pacific Islander, American Indian and Alaska Native. Part of Economic Census; 2002 data available, and 1997 and 1992 data from the Surveys of Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises.
