Regional Economic Information System (REIS), Bureau of Economic Analysis
Personal income by source and per capita income for states, metropolitan areas, BEA regions, and counties; disposable per capita income for states. Earnings data provided at 2-digit industry level. Two series provided at the state level — one for all employees (including civilian wage and salary workers, proprietors and military) and one for civilian and military wage and salary employees. At substate level, one data series provided, for all employees.

Money Income Data, Bureau of the Census
Access to various Census Bureau on-line resources and documentation regarding money income. Data sites of interest include:

  • American Community Survey — Using adaptation of Decennial Census long form, annually revised estimates of income and other data for states, cities, counties, metropolitan areas, census tracts, block groups, and other geographic areas. Being phased in 1996-2009. Currently, data annually collected for states, metro areas and counties of over 250,000 population, and 31 demonstration areas. 
  • Median Household Income — 1997-99, by state, based on Current Population Survey, published September 2000.
  • Median Family Income (4-person families) — 1974-latest year, by state, based on Current Population Survey.
  • Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates — Income estimates for counties, school districts, and states. Estimates based on modeled relations between current income levels and income tax and program data available for counties and states for years following the Decennial Census.
  • 1990 Census Lookup — Median and distribution of money income in 1989 for for states, metropolitan areas, counties, cities, places, census tracts and other geographic areas.

Median Family Income, Department of Housing and Urban Development
Estimated median family income for states, metro areas, and non-metro counties, fiscal year 1999.  Estimates based on 1990 Census median family income estimates updated to 1999 using a combination of Bureau of Labor Statistics earnings and employment data and Census Divisional P-60 median family income data.

Individual Income Tax Returns, Internal Revenue Service Limited Free Data
Adjusted gross income, itemized deductions, taxable income, tax liability, and earned income tax credit, for states, counties, and zip codes.

Bankruptcy Filings, American Bankruptcy Institute
Annual and quarterly bankruptcy filings (including business and non-business), by state and judicial district, 1980-latest year.

Poverty Data, Bureau of the Census
Access to various Census Bureau on-line resources and documentation regarding poverty.  Data sites of interest include:

State Labor Market Information Agencies
Access to ES-202 data from homepages of individual state workforce development agencies. Degree of on-line access varies by state. Detailed off-line printouts often available.

County Business Patterns, Bureau of the Census
Data on mid-March employment, annual and first quarter payroll, and number of establishments, by detailed industry, for states, counties, metro areas, and zip codes. 1993-latest year for full reports, 1988-92 for data to 2-digit level. Available on-line in three formats. Industries covered do not include agriculture, railroad transportation, and government. 

Statistics of U.S. Businesses, Bureau of the Census and Small Business Administration Limited Free Data
Annual and longitudinal analysis of corporate and establishment payroll data by size, by detailed industry, 1989-latest year. For states and metro areas, free data include:

  • Query-based Tables — Data on firms, establishments, employment, and payroll by size and industry, 1998 and 1999.
  • Set Tabulations — Firms, establishments, employment, payroll, 1992 and 1997-latest year.
  • Additional tables from the Small Business Administration.

Fee-based analysis available, including by smaller geographic units, by legal form of organization (corporations, partnerships, sole proprietorships, and non-profit organizations), and for additional years.

Economic Census, Bureau of the Census
Censuses of U.S. business establishments and firms, by industry group, for years ending "2" and "7". Statistics provided for all industries include measure of output (sales, receipts, revenue, value of shipments, or value of construction work done); employment, establishments, and payroll; and other data particular to sector (e.g., investment in plant and equipment). Data available by states, metro areas, counties, cities and places, and zip codes. Current Employment Statistics (CES/790), Bureau of Labor Statistics
Monthly and annual estimates of civilian nonagricultural employment, and, for non-supervisory personnel, average weekly hours and average weekly and hourly wage, by industry, for states and major metropolitan areas. Data collected through monthly survey managed by a Federal-State cooperative program.

Occupational Employment Statistics (OES), Bureau of Labor Statistics
Employment and wage data for over 750 occupations, provided annually for states and metro areas. Data by 2- and 3-digit industry available from most state OES programs off-line and through customized tabulation. Managed through a Federal-State cooperative program.

National Compensation Survey--Wages, Bureau of Labor Statistics
Hourly, weekly, and annual wages, and hours worked, by occupation, for metro areas. Each area report covers full range of occupations. Predecessor Occupational Compensation Survey provides data for selected occupations, through 1995.

Salary Tools, SalaryExpert.com Limited Free Data
Free annual salary estimates for numerous occupations in multiple metro areas and all states. Based on BLS Occupational Employment Statistics Data. More detailed profiles available for fee.
