Provided through a Federal-State cooperative program.

Metro Area Labor Force Data, Department of Housing and Urban Development
Monthly and average annual estimates of labor force, employment, and unemployment rate for metro areas, disaggregated by central city and suburbs, 1990-latest month.  Prepared by BLS for HUD's State of the Cities Data Systems.

Geographic Profile of Employment and Unemployment
Annual estimates of civilian noninstitutional population, employment, unemployment, and unemployment rate, for states, 50 metropolitan areas, and 17 central cities. Includes distribution by occupation, industry of employment, population characteristic (age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin), and full- and part-time work. Based on Current Population Survey. 

American Community Survey, Bureau of the Census
Using adaptation of Decennial Census long form, annually revised estimates of 
employment and other socioeconomic data for states, cities, counties, metropolitan areas, census tracts, block groups, and other geographic areas. Being phased in 1996-2009. Currently, data annually collected for states, metro areas and counties of over 250,000 population, and 31 demonstration areas.

Unemployment Insurance Activity, Employment and Training Administration,  Department of Labor
Unemployment insurance activity data, by state. Data include number of claimants, exhaustions, and the insured unemployment rate (insured unemployed/covered employment). Annual data available 1938-three years ago; quarterly data, past 12 quarters; monthly data, past 12 months; weekly data, past 6 weeks. 

Union Affiliation of Workers, Bureau of Labor Statistics
Data on worker membership in and representation by unions, by state, 1993-latest year.

Regional Economic Information System (REIS), Bureau of Economic Analysis
Annual average employment by SIC industry (two-digit for states, one-digit for other areas). Two industry series provided at the state level — one for all employees (including civilian wage and salary workers, proprietors and military) and one for civilian and military wage and salary employees. At substate level, one data series provided, for all employees.

Current Employment Statistics (CES/790), Bureau of Labor Statistics
Monthly and annual estimates of civilian nonagricultural employment, and, for non-supervisory personnel, average weekly hours and average weekly and hourly wage, by industry, for states and major metropolitan areas. Data collected through monthly survey managed by a Federal-State cooperative program.

Covered Employment and Wages (ES-202), Bureau of Labor Statistics 
Annual and quarterly figures for establishments, wage and salary employment, and wages, by industry, up to the 4-digit SIC level, by state, metro area, and county. Data obtained through collection of state unemployment insurance premiums from employers; data organized and disseminated through a Federal-State cooperative program. 

State Labor Market Information Agencies
Access to CES/790 and ES-202 data from homepages of individual state workforce development agencies. Degree of on-line access varies by state.

County Business Patterns, Bureau of the Census
Data on mid-March employment, annual and first quarter payroll, and number of establishments, by detailed industry, for states, counties, metro areas, and zip codes. 1993-latest year for full reports, 1988-92 for data to 2-digit level. Available on-line in three formats. Industries covered do not include agriculture, railroad transportation, and government. 

Metro Business Patterns, Department of Housing and Urban Development
Data on establishments, employment, and average pay, for 2-digit SIC, 1993-96. Data provided for 101 metro areas, disaggregated by central city and suburbs.  Special extract of County Business Patterns prepared for HUD as part of its State of the Cities Data Systems.

Statistics of U.S. Businesses, Bureau of the Census and Small Business Administration Limited Free Data
Annual and longitudinal analysis of corporate and establishment employment data by size, by detailed industry, 1989-latest year. For states and metro areas, free data include:

  • Query-based Tables — Data on firms, establishments, employment, and payroll by size and industry, 1998 and 1999.
  • Set Tabulations — Firms, establishments, employment, payroll, 1992 and 1997-latest year; change in establishments and employment due to births, deaths, expansions, and contractions, year-to-year, 1995-forward.
  • Additional tables from the Small Business Administration.

Fee-based analysis available, including by smaller geographic units, by legal form of organization (corporations, partnerships, sole proprietorships, and non-profit organizations), and for additional years.

Economic Census, Bureau of the Census
Censuses of U.S. business establishments and firms, by industry group, for years ending "2" and "7". Statistics provided for all industries include measure of output (sales, receipts, revenue, value of shipments, or value of construction work done); employment, establishments, and payroll; and other data particular to sector (e.g., investment in plant and equipment). Data available by states, metro areas, counties, cities and places, and zip codes. Nonemployer Statistics, Bureau of the Census
Data on establishments with no paid employees, typically self-employed individuals and partnerships, by industry, for states, metro areas, and counties.

Mass Layoff Statistics, Bureau of Labor Statistics
Data on mass layoffs (50 or more initial unemployment insurance claims at one establishment) and extended mass layoffs (lasting 31 or more days), by state. Data include number of layoff events and unemployment insurance claims; extended mass layoff data include distribution of claims by race, ethnicity, and gender. Data provided through a Federal-State cooperative program.
