Key Data Series

Consumer Expenditure Survey
Average annual consumer expenditure data, by detailed type of goods and services, for U.S. and major regions (annual) and 26 MSAs (biannual average). Includes data on income and consumer unit (families and single consumers). Data available from 1984-latest year.

Consumer Price Index (CPI)
Price indexes for the U.S., the four Census regions, size of city, cross-classifications of regions and size-classes (e.g., metro areas of over 1.5 million in population in the West), and 26 metro areas. Indexes available for major groups of consumer expenditures (food and beverages, housing, apparel, transportation, medical care, recreation, education and communications, and other goods and services), for items within each group, and for special categories, such as services.

Covered Employment and Wages (ES-202) 
Annual and quarterly figures for establishments, wage and salary employment, and wages, by industry, at the 4-digit SIC level, by state, metro area, and county. Data obtained through collection of state unemployment insurance premiums from employers; data organized and disseminated through a Federal-State cooperative program. 

Current Employment Statistics (CES/790)
Monthly and annual estimates of civilian nonagricultural employment, and, for non-supervisory personnel, average weekly hours and average weekly and hourly wage, by industry, for states and major metropolitan areas. Data collected through monthly survey managed by a Federal-State cooperative program.

Geographic Profile of Employment and Unemployment
Annual estimates of civilian noninstitutional population, employment, unemployment, and unemployment rate, for states, 50 metropolitan areas, and 17 central cities. Includes distribution by occupation, industry of employment, population characteristic (age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin), and full- and part-time work. Based on Current Population Survey. 

Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS)
Monthly and annual estimates of civilian labor force, employment and unemployment for 6,700 areas, including all states, metropolitan statistical/primary metropolitan statistical areas, counties and county equivalents, cities of 25,000 population or more, and all cities and towns in New England. Provided through a Federal-State cooperative program.

Mass Layoff Statistics
Data on mass layoffs (50 or more initial unemployment insurance claims at one establishment) and extended mass layoffs (lasting 31 or more days), by state. Data include number of layoff events and unemployment insurance claims; extended mass layoff data include distribution of claims by race, ethnicity, and gender. Data provided through a Federal-State cooperative program.

National Compensation Survey--Wages
Hourly, weekly, and annual wages, and hours worked, by occupation, for metro areas. Series initiated in 1996. Each area report covers full range of occupations, unlike predecessor Occupational Compensation Survey.

Hourly, weekly, and annual wages, and hours worked, for selected occupations, for metro areas, through 1995.

Occupational Employment Statistics (OES)
Employment and wage data for over 750 occupations, provided annually for states and metro areas. Managed through a Federal-State cooperative program.

Occupational Injuries, Illnesses, and Fatalities
Number and incidence rate of occupational injuries

illnesses, and fatalities, by state and year.

Union Affiliation of Workers
Data on worker membership in and representation by unions, by state, 1993-latest year.
